Want to know how fit you are? Drop and give me 20 — or less, depending on your age.

The number of pushups you can do can be a good indicator of your muscular strength and endurance, according to a list of guidelines issued by the Mayo Clinic. If you can hit these targets, the experts say, you have a “good fitness level.”

Women aged 25 should be able to do 20 pushups, while 25-year-old men should be able to do 28.

At age 45, women should be able to do 14 pushups, while men should aim for 16.

At age 55, the numbers are 10 for women, and 12 for men.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 65-year-old men and women should both aim for 10 pushups.

If you’re unable to hit the target, it’s recommended that you start by doing pushups on your knees as you build your endurance. And it’s important to maintain the correct form — no slacking. This includes keeping your back straight, and lowering your body “until your chin touches the floor.”

One test — the running/jogging test — mandates that women who are 25 should be able to run 1.5 miles in 13 minutes. (For men, the goal is 11 minutes.)
