Sutton Foster is bringing a beloved book character to life in a whole new way.The Tony Award winner, 49, will narrate a new series of Pippi Longstocking audiobooks, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal. The three titles will be published by Listening Library this spring, in honor of late author Astrid Lindgren’s 80th birthday.The upcoming series includes the original Pippi Longstocking novel, as well as Pippi Goes on Board and Pippi in the South Seas.Pippi Longstocking was first published by Swedish author Lindgren as Pippi Långstrump in 1945, with the English version coming in 1950. The series follows nine-year-old Pippi, a plucky girl with a pair of quirky plaits who moves to a Swedish village following the death of her parents.

"Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking is not just the strongest girl in the world," Sutton says, in a statement. "She is a symbol of freedom, strength, kindness, courage and justice. A rebel who uses her superpowers wisely and never abuses her power. She stands up against what is wrong.”

The story was initially recorded and released in an audio version in 1962, narrated by actress Esther Benson. The new audiobook editions will also include music from the 1970s TV and film adaptations of the story.

Most recently, she starred as Princess Winnifred in the Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress.

"Pippi is unlike anyone you've ever met before,” the narrator says. “She's one of a kind, she marches to the beat of her own drum, she's always game for adventure. She's timeless, even though she's 80.”

"Thanks to that, she has changed the world for the better since 1945," she continues. "Pippi has no hidden agenda; she is who she is — a fun and dynamic playmate to be inspired by. If you are very strong, you must also be very kind. Be more like Pippi, use your own Pippi power, and make the world a little better." The audiobooks will be published on March 4, 2025, and are now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.
