Report: After Son Opened Fire at Trump Rally, Shooter's Dad Called Police Worried that Son and Rifle Were Missing

A short time after a Pennsylvania man opened fire at a campaign rally for Donald Trump, his father called local police expressing concern about his son's whereabouts, saying the 20-year-old was missing along with his rifle, according to a report by NBC News, which cites unnamed senior officials.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by Secret Service moments after he opened fire at ther ally in what the FBI says was an assassination attempt on Saturday, July 13, in Butler, Pa.

Trump was escorted off the stage by Secret Service officials after he suffered an injury to his right ear.

The shooting left many with questions about the would-be assassin, who was from Bethel Park, Pa., and was a recent high-school graduate working in a nursing home.

On Saturday, after the shooting, the shooter’s father reportedly reached out to local police and expressed concerns about his son's whereabouts, according to senior officials who spoke with NBC News.

The worried father reportedly notified police that his son and his rifle had gone missing, according to the three senior officials, whom NBC News did not name. It wasn't immediately clear if the father made the call after hearing about the shooting or without realizing the shooting had taken place.

The call led police to the shooter's home, per the outlet. There, police found more than a dozen guns, -

according to four senior officials who spoke with NBC News. The outlet did not name those officials.

Bethel Park police directed PEOPLE to the FBI when contacted about this information. The shooter's family was not reachable for further details.

On the day of the shooting, the shooter requestedthe day off from work, according to unnamed sources cited by 6 ABC and CNN. He claimedhe had “something to do,”per several law enforcement officials, CNN reported. He reportedly told his co-workers he would be back the next day.

The nursing home declined to comment when contacted by PEOPLE.

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter, died in the shooting, CNN,ReutersandThe Pittsburgh Post-Gazette previously reported.

Two people were critically injured, a local hospital told PEOPLE following the shooting.

The ensuing investigation has focused on the Secret Service's handling of security at the rally, prompting the Department of Homeland Security to look into the matter.

Investigators still do not know the shooter's motive. The FBI did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
