Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee were kicked out of the running on Tuesday in a historic Senate race that pitted four high-profile figures against one another

Democratic Rep.Adam Schiff and former baseball star Steve Garvey have advanced in the California Senate primary and will face off in November, eliminating progressive Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee from the running.

The Associated Press called the race around 9 p.m. local time with 38% of votes reported.

California has a blanket primary system, meaning candidates from all parties compete on the same ballot and the top two vote-getters move forward to the general election. That also means that, in theory, two members of the same party could have gone head to head in November.

This year's Senate race has been historic by nature, as a swath of popular candidates battledto fill the seat Dianne Feinstein occupiedfor more than 30 years.

EMILY's List President Laphonza Butler was appointed to temporarily replace Feinstein after her death until a proper election could be held, but expressed that she was not interested in running for a full term.

Schiff, who joined Congress in 2001 and most recently chaired the House Intelligence Committee, became a household name when he led the first impeachment trial for Trump. His Senate campaign has receiv -

ed some of the strongest endorsements from California leaders — including former SpeakerNancy Pelosiand former California Sen.Barbara Boxer.

Garvey, 75, is a former Dodgers and Padres baseball star whodisrupted the raceby joining as a Republican. His campaign has focused on broad "family issues," including education, public safety and the economy.

Porter, 50, and Lee, 77, are significant progressive figures in the House of Representatives, who each forfeited their seats to run for Senate this year.

Since joining Congress in 2018, Porter has repeatedly made a name for herself as a tough questioner who can pull out Democratic victories in key battleground districts.

Lee, who joined Congress in 1998, has long been one of the most vocal antiwar politicians in Washington, casting the sole vote against authorizing a military response in Afghanistan after 9/11 and taking a firm stance to end the Gaza war in her Senate campaign.

California's Senate race was among the most heated 2024 primaries in the nation. With Schiff's Democratic competitors out of the race, he is likely to pull off a general election victory over Garvey due to the state's solidly Democratic lean.
