Pregnant Teen’s Body Found in Wooded Area. Her Ex-Boyfriend Is Now Charged With Her Murder

A Georgia man has been charged for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend in Loganville, Ga., the Gwinnett County Police announced in a Tuesday, July 23 press release.

The body of pregnant Mia Campos, 16, was discovered by her family early on the morning of July 15 “in a wooded area just off the roadway,” police said in their initial July 17 statement.

Six days later, On July 17, her ex-boyfriend and the father of the unborn child, Jesus Monroy, 20, was charged for allegedly providing false statements to police. On July 23, the detectives assigned to the case charged Monroy with murder, felony murder, feticide and aggravated assault, per court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

His arrest follows the initial reports from Campos’ family that they couldn’t find her after she left home on Sunday, July 14. Police say Campos was lured "to the entrance of her neighborhood" before her body was left in the woods. She died due to asphyxiation, per an arrest warrant obtained by PEOPLE.

After she disappeared, the family used a cell phone app to locate her body. 

On July 17, the authorities arrested Monroy for allegedly "giving false statements to a police officer," police said in their statement.

As of Thursday, July 25, the court documents do not include informa -

tion regarding Monroy’s plea. Additionally, the Gwinnett County Police have not revealed the motive. PEOPLE reached out to his attorney, Brandon Delfunt, for comment.

On July 17, Campos’ mother, Miriam Zárate, told 11 Alive that the family found the teen minutes away from their home. Zarate revealed when the family discovered Campos, her body was swollen, cold and purple, and her hand was on her belly.

“I found my daughter laid face-down,” the victim’s father, Edward Campos, said, per Atlanta News First. “It was hard. I knew it was something wrong – her lips, her bleeding nose.”

Mia was the youngest of five siblings, 11 Alive reports. And she was expected to welcome her first child, whom she already named Sebastian, this September. 

The Campos family has started a GoFundMe to help cover her funeral expenses and to give Campos and her baby a dignified burial."

Delfunt and a representative for Gwinnett County Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday.
