Katharine McPhee's son may be a pro at the drums, but he's taking a little break from them for now.

Speaking with PEOPLE on the red carpet for the 58th Annual Country Music Association Awards, the singer, 40, shared that her 3-year-old son Rennie is no longer interested in playing the drums anymore after going viral earlier this year — much to her husband David Foster's disappointment.

"If you’ve noticed, we’ve kind of stopped posting so many videos. He’s not as interested as he was," McPhee laments. "We were never making him play. We were never demanding that he play. But he’s just sort of lost interest."

"He’s very much into me. Obviously, I'll take it ‘cause I love it, but he’s really into everything Mommy," she continues. "Just being active and running and playing with his toys and things like that, so he’s just taken a little hiatus. My husband’s devastated about it."

Rennie made headlines earlier this year when a video of himdrumming at one of his dad's Washington D.C -

. shows went viral. Despite the toddler being unmic'ed and just banging along while Foster's drummer JR Robinson was playing, it was obvious Rennie was an incredibly skilled prodigy.

"It was pretty amazing," Foster, 75, told PEOPLE at the time. "He's studied our drummer JR Robinson, who's incredible, for the last year and a half and he's figured it out on his own."

A month later in March, Foster posted another clip of the tot playing along perfectly on his drum kit at home as his mom McPhee Foster sang "I Will Always Love You."

However, while on tour in Asia, Foster told PEOPLE that Rennie was sadly taking a little time off from perfecting his skills.

"He's taking a little hiatus," Foster said. "He hasn't really been drumming for the past month or two."

"He's just taking a hiatus," he continued. "As a parent, you can't push them. It's like, you want to play the drums, and now what's next? So he's gone off of it a little bit. But he still loves to watch our drummer play and come to rehearsals, and loves being on the road with us."
