It's a baker's dozen rescue.

On Sunday, July 14, police officers found 13 puppies on the side of the road. According to local ABC News affiliate KAKE, the discovery was made in Garden City near 9th and Maple Streets at roughly 9:30 a.m.

The Garden City Police Department posted about the rescue on Facebook, hoping to reunite the puppies with their families.

"PUPPY LOVE: Officers found this sweet litter of puppies near 9th and Maple Streets (THIRTEEN of them)," the update began.

"We made them junior 'paw-tners' and showered them with love and attention before taking them to the animal shelter," the police department continued on social media. "Fingers crossed they are reunited with their family(s) soon!"

The Garden City Police Department told PEOPLE that the dogs were "hot" when they were found due to the extreme temperatures in the area (AccuWeather reports that the temperatures reached 97 degrees).

"Other than being hot when we found them, they were sweet as can be and appear to be in good -

health," the police department shared in an statement to PEOPLE, adding that "temperatures were expected to be in the low triple-digits" the day of the rescue.

The Garden City Police Department is investigating if someone abandoned the 13 dogs.

"Officers made sure to shower them with extra attention before surrendering them to the Finney County Humane Society for further care," the agency added in its statement. "The thirteen puppies weigh 6-8 pounds each."

The Finney County Humane Society also shared pictures and descriptions of the puppies on their Facebook page in hopes of finding who the dogs belong to.

Another severe weather dog rescue occurred in July. On July 5, in Kingsport, Tennessee, a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper spotted a dog on the side of the road in the middle of a massive rainstorm.
