Catherine O'Hara is taking a trip down memory lane to a time when she caused quite the kerfuffle at the Vatican.

During a visit to The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday with her Argylle costar Bryce Dallas Howard, the Schitt's Creek alum, 69, recalled how a unique wedding gift for her and her husband Bo Welch, 72, almost landed the couple in hot water with the church.

O’Hara and Welch met on the set of the 1980s cult classic Beetlejuice, and when the pair tied the knot in 1992, the film's director, Tim Burton, 65, gave them tickets to a private tour of the Vatican.

"Somebody had given it to him. It was a very inside kind of deal,” O’Hara quipped before explaining the unforgettable experience.

"Ok, so a priest took us around — he got yelled at at one point. I wish I spoke Italian, but he was definitely getting yelled at by another priest because we were in the pope’s closet, like, looking at garments and stuff. It was crazy,” the Best in Show actress said as Howard and Clarkson look on completely flabbergasted.

Thankfully, they weren't booted from the religious site despite the snafu. Instead, she and Welch ended up in tiny museum where gifts to the Vatican from world leaders were stored.

“And this priest is just letting us open cases, and pretending to put a crown inside Bo’s backpack, taking pictures,” she said. The -

actress admitted that while she didn’t have the photos of that day with her, she does still have them “somewhere.”

In addition to facilitating their unique day in Vatican City, Burton was responsible for the couple getting together.

At the time they were making Beetlejuice, O'Hara recalls she had a bit of a crush on Welch, who was a production designer, but was too timid to let him know. The actress said that despite Welch talking to her daily, “he never asked me out.”

O’Hara mentioned to Burton that she didn’t have any luck scoring a date with him.

After hearing her dilemma, Burton decided to play matchmaker, and not long after their conversation, Welch approached O’Hara and asked her if she’d like to join him and other members of the art department for what O'Hara seems to dub a very unromantic outing at a swap meet.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, O’Hara joked about her affinity for church while reflecting on her role as Kate McCallister in the 1990 Christmas classic Home Alone.

Sparked by a December debate published by the The New York Times about the family being in the top 1% of earners in Chicago, the metropolitan area where the film is set, O’Hara weighed in on how the fictional family may have made their money.

Admitting she was “aware of how beautiful” the house was, “that's not where my head was when I was doing the movie,” she told PEOPLE before sharing her own theory.

Of course, they all went to Paris, didn't they? I guess Peter had his own religion,” she quipped of her on-screen husband, played by the late John Heard. “Church of the McCallisters.”
