Welcome to The Blueprint, where we break down the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and build them back up, piece by piece.

I’ve been looking for a way to give my spring wardrobe a Mia Thermopolis-makeover moment — and Anne Hathway just bestowed me with the blueprint.

The Princess Diaries actress, 41, hit the town with her husband, Adam Shulman, to attend a celebrity-packed birthday party on Saturday. She wore a black jacket and matching top with some cropped jeans for that spring breeze. She also carried a coordinating handbag by its top handle (this bag style has also been a go-to for Jennifer Lopez recently) and slid into some strappy shoes for the night out in New York City.

As if you wanted to hear another pun, The Idea of You star’s outfit is, actually, such a good idea for spring dinners, celebrations, and get-togethers: A black shirt is pretty much foolproof, while shorter pants free up your ankles and feet from heavy, sweat-causing fabric. And both Katie Holmes and Gwyneth Paltrow wore cropped jeans recently, too. Shoes also matter big time, and open-toed sandals are much more ventilated than sneakers.

I was wearing white tops all winter, but it looks like I’m going back to black ones this spring. Even though I can’t figure out whether Hathaway’s is a sleev -

eless or a longer T-shirt, I’m planning to go with the latter for more protection from the future blaring air conditioning. According to one shopper, this one from Nautica is “not skin snug but not baggy,” which means I can wear it under jackets and not look bulky or as is on a too-hot-to-handle day.

Sometimes I feel a little too exposed when I’m wearing shorts, but I know that if I don’t, I’ll sweat profusely. Now, I have another option: These cropped jeans, which are 42 percent off at Nordstrom Rack, flare out for a fit that has more room for air to fan through. It also gives me more of an opportunity to show off my seasonal shoes.

For all I know Hathaway could have been wearing heels, but I can’t really tell. But even if she was, I’d still choose these $35 sandals from The Drop. The thin strap across the toes is uncanny, but there’s an additional one across the ankle, which A) makes them look less like the slides I used to wear after volleyball practice and B) helps secure them on the feet.

I always told myself I could dress like a celebrity One Day, and today is finally that day. Keep scrolling to shop more styles, including top-handle purses, inspired by Anne Hathaway now.
