Bluey is gearing up for a big-screen adventure!
Based on the beloved Australian animated preschool series, the first-ever Bluey animated film is officially in the works. The film will be a Ludo Studio production from BBC Studios and the Walt Disney Company and will be released in theaters worldwide in 2027.
While details remain under wraps, Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack are set to reprise their roles as Bluey's mom, Chilli, and dad, Bandit, with original creator Joe Brumm leading the project as writer and director.
In a Dec. 17 press release announcing the project, Brumm shared that he "always thought 'Bluey' deserved a theatrical movie," and was looking forward to giving the beloved dog a bigger story.
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that," he said. "I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together."
In addition to her own movie, Bluey is headed to Disney as the company announced on Dec. 19 that it was adding the character to theme parks and the Disney Cruise Line, per The Hollywood Reporter.
From the cast to the release date, here's everything to know about the Bluey movie.
Although specific plot details have not been revealed, the press release states that the film will deliver "the same charm and humor that made the television series a global phenomenon."
"The movie will continue the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her Mum, Dad and her little sister, Bingo," per the release.
The latest season concluded with a shock: the creators dropped an unexpected episode titled "Surprise" after releasing "The Sign," which was originally billed as the finale.
"The Sign" — which was four ti -
mes as long as the averageBlueyepisode —was an emotional rollercoaster as Bandit received a job offer that would require the family to move away from their home in Brisbane, leaving the rest of the Heelers struggling to process the news.
In the final moments, however, Bandit knocked down the "For Sale" sign in front of their house, signaling that the Heelers were staying put and culminating in a heartfelt family hug in the end.
Meanwhile, "Surprise" offered a glimpse into Bluey's future. It ended with a visit from a grown-up Bluey (and her future child!) returning home to visit her parents in the same house on the hill that she grew up in.
The film version will hear some familiar voices, as Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack will reprise their roles as Bluey's parents, Chilli and Bandit, respectively.
Following the film announcement, Zanetti posted a photo on Instagram of her sitting next to McCormack with the caption, "Who is excited about a@officialblueytvmovie?! ???????? (You guys I am very excited!)."
The voice of Bluey herself has always been anonymous, so it is unclear who will voice the dog in the movie. However, Geraldine Hakewill voiced the adult Bluey in "Surprise."
Bluey creator Brumm is set to write and direct the movie version, with Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct. Brum will also serve as executive producer.
They will team up with award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith (Happy Feet, The Lego Movie).
The Bluey movie is slated to be released in 2027, though no date has been announced yet.
Bluey will first premiere in theaters globally before being available to stream on Disney+. In the meantime, fans can prepare for its release by watching all episodes of the series on Hulu and Disney+ with a premium subscription.
