Doc Rivers’ daughter is married to professional basketball player Seth Curry
Doc Rivers is a legend in the world of basketball, and he has a sporty family, too.
His daughter, Callie Rivers Curry, was born on Sept. 17, 1989, and went on to have a successful collegiate athletic career. While her father and three brothers are known for basketball, Callie excelled in volleyball and played professionally in Puerto Rico after graduating.
Although Callie didn't follow in her dad's footsteps exactly, she has said that Doc's support was ever-present when she was on the University of Florida volleyball team. “He always tries to pump me up before each match," she told The Gainesville Sun in 2007. "After the game he says good job, then he gives me a critique. I'm not sure how much he knows about volleyball, but he knows about sports.”
Callie has also stayed close to the basketball world, marrying Dallas Mavericks player Seth Curry in 2019. The couple gave Doc two grandchildren in 2018 and 2021, and Seth has said that the kids call their grandpa "Papa Doc."
From her family life to her career, here’s everything to know about Doc Rivers’ daughter.
Callie is Doc and his ex-wife Kristen Rivers' second child and only daughter. She was born in 1989 while her father was playing with the Atlanta Hawks. Callie has an older brother, Jeremiah, who is two years her senior, and two younger brothers, Austin and Spencer.
Speaking to The Gainesville Sun in 2007, Callie described herself as a tomboy growing up because of their male-dominated household. “I was really aggressive. You have to be in a family of all boys. If you're not, you're not going to get what you want," she said. "I don't think I ever had Barbie dolls. We'd just play basketball or go swimming or play tag."
Coming from a sporty family, Callie played volleyball for the University of Florida Gators from 2007 to 2010. She was an outside hitter all four years.
After playing college volleyball, Callie joined the Leonas de Ponce team in Puerto Rico, per Sports Illustrated.
After announcing their engagement in February 2019, Callie married professional basketball player Seth in September of that year.
The two families were already intertwined before the pair tied the knot. Callie’s brother Austin was Seth’s teammate when they both played basketball at Duke University, and Doc was Seth’s coach when he played for the Philadelphia 76ers.
After news of their engagement broke, Doc spoke about his love for his future son-in-law. "I couldn’t be happier. He’s such a gentleman. As a father, that is all you want," he told Andscape. "He just calle -
d me and asked like normal people. I always tell people, ‘We’re all normal people at the end of the day.’ "
Callie gave birth to her first child, daughter Carter Lynn, in 2018. Speaking after Carter’s birth, Seth told the Los Angeles Times that Doc is known as "Papa Doc" to his granddaughter.
“I’m sure he’s going to spoil her a little more the older she gets with more stuff she can play with and have, but he’s been great," Seth said of his father-in-law. “He’s had a lot of energy around her. You just see how much he loves his grandkids.”
The couple’s younger child, son Cash, was born in 2021, and shortly after, Seth and Callie introduced him by showing his new nursery to PEOPLE. They discussed the importance of getting Carter used to having a new sibling and making the transition from the nursery to “her first big-girl bed.”
Callie co-hosts a weekly podcast called Bachelor Party with Juliet Litman. They discuss the casts and drama of Bachelor Nation, as well as recaps of and opinions on other reality TV shows.
The former athlete also appeared on a March 2022 episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast in which she discussed her husband’s trade to the Brooklyn Nets, his brother Steph Curry’s injury and The Bachelorette.
The Rivers have been involved in basketball for decades, and the same is true for the Curry family. Doc and Dell Curry, Seth’s father, played against each other in the NBA in the 1980s and 1990s, but there's no bad blood between the pair. Doc told Andscape that the Currys are a “great family” whom he’s known for “100 years."
Callie’s brother Austin said that he was initially concerned when he heard his sister was dating an NBA player, but he relaxed when he found out her new partner was a Curry.
“NBA players travel a lot. There is a reputation. You don’t want your sister to get hurt. But when I heard it was Seth, I was relieved because he is one of the guys that act the right way," he told Andscape.
Although she is more associated with the sports world, Callie is a music fan, too.
In 2016, she posted images of Kanye West from his Saint Pablo tour on Instagram and a caption inspired by one of the rapper's songs. The same year she shared an image from an Adele concert with a similarly lyrical caption. Callie also has an Instagram highlights reel called "love=music" on which she shared a 30-day song challenge.
Her parents have been an influence on her music taste as well. In 2017, she posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was “so thankful” her parents played “great music” throughout her childhood.
