Two decomposed bodies were found inside an 18-wheeler trailer in Texas early in the morning on Thursday, July 18, according to authorities.

Speaking to reporters on the scene, Houston police said that they got a call a “little after midnight” from an individual who overheard some people experiencing homelessness “talking about two bodies found inside a truck,” according to CBS affiliate KHOU.

When they arrived at the scene, police said they realized they were surrounded by a number of Purple Heart donation trucks, reported ABC affiliate KTRK-TV and local station WOAI-TV.

Then, police found that there was a hole cut out of one of the trucks. Inside, police found what appeared to be two bodies, per the outlets.

kens told reporters on the scene that the bodies were "very decomposed, almost look like a mummy."

"They've been there a very long time," he added.Police said it appeared like the individuals, who have not been identified, had been living inside the truck.

When reached for comment by PEOPLE on Friday, July 19, the Houston Police Department confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

An official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, per KHOU.
