Melissa Joan Hart is opening up about her son's college plans – or lack thereof.

While chatting with PEOPLE about her latest partnership with World Vision to promote "Beloved" Friendship Bracelets as a featured item in this year's catalog, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch alum, 48, also spoke about her oldest son Mason's choice to pursue aviation and live at home instead of going to college.

"It's been tricky," the mom of three admits. "There's all this expectation about what should happen. He chose not to go to college because he's following a path of aviation, so he doesn't really need a college degree for that."

Hart tells PEOPLE that the 18-year-old is "still contemplating going to college someday," but as of now, "he just wants to focus on flying."

"So he's staying at home right now," the actress continues, adding, "I wake up every morning and sa -

y my prayers, and I'm so thankful he's safe and home in our house."

Despite her concerns for Mason's career, Hart is very grateful that "I get to see him and have dinner with him" every day. "And once in a while I'll drag him to get a Christmas tree or to go see his brother's concert," she quips.

"So I look at it as a real blessing now, whereas, in the beginning, it felt weird to not be doing what everyone else was traditionally doing," she explains to PEOPLE. "The kids were all leaving for college. They're decorating their dorms. Or they're coming home for the holiday and stuff."

"So it's a little strange to not be doing the typical, normal thing," Hart adds. "But I also think a lot of kids these days are finding different paths, and I think that's fine."

In addition to Mason, Hart is also a mom to sons Braydon, 16, and Tucker, 12. She shares all three boys with husband herMark Wilkerson.
