'I Made So Much Effort' (Exclusive): Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones Recall 'First Date' on Twisters Set

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones are big on first impressions.

While the two actors had met a few times before filming Twisters, which releases in theaters July 19, expectations were highest during their “first date” on set, they tell PEOPLE exclusively.

“What made me laugh,” says Powell, 35, “was Daisy came in this very chic outfit with a scarf and all these different things. Cut to — that was the last time I saw Daisy dressed up. We wore sweatpants for the rest of the shoot.”

“I made so much effort for that first date,” quips Edgar-Jones, 26. 

“First date, just came out of the gate, full style,” Powell continues. “I was like, ‘Wow. She just dresses so chic’ … You really came out of the gate strong.”

“I remember every time I came to set you were like, ‘The same jumper?’ I just wore this one gray sweatsuit,” says Edgar-Jones. “I was like, ‘I'm so tired.’ ”

Considering the blustery mayhem in the Lee Isaac Chung-directed standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, it’s no wonder Edgar-Jones was tired. She leads Twisters as meteorologist Kate Cooper, while Powell plays famous storm chaser Tyler Owens, the "Tornado Wrangler.”

nth three into being blasted by a jet engine, rain, hail, debris, you're just like — every morning I just slept right up until I had to leave. Put on whatever I could and just went to set — fell to set, really.”

Powell and Edgar-Jones also had impressions of each other prior to meeting at the premiere of Edgar-Jones’ 2022 thriller Fresh. “It's really, really fun to work with somebody that you really admire their work before because it's just a thrilling way to go to work knowing that that person's taking care of their side of the table,” says Powell, calling his costar’s work in 2020 miniseries Normal People “a defining performance.”

Edgar-Jones “loved” Powell in Set It Up and Top Gun: Maverick, she says. “When I heard that Glen was up for Tyler, I was like, ‘Oh, he's perfect for that part, he is going to completely crush it.’ ”

Turning to her costar, she adds, “You're impossible to not like!”

Twisters also stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane and Maura Tierney. It storms into theaters July 19.
