Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin is “lucky” in love with wife Anca Faur!

The 94-year-old retired astronaut, who recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, opened up to PEOPLE about how married life with Faur, 65, has been going more than a year after the pair tied the knot on Jan. 20, 2023.

“I have never been happier in my life than now with my time with Anca,” Aldrin says. “She is the love of my life, and we do everything together, from eating meals, planning projects and watching the world go by, to meeting with our two families and celebrating — as we are at this 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing.”

“I am lucky beyond words,” he adds.

The pair first met in December 2017 at a work event before they began dating several months later in May 2018. Aldrin previously described Faur to PEOPLE as someone who has “the whole Wizard of Oz package” with “brains, heart and courage.” He added, “There is something special about her and the way we connect so well.”

Aldrin also shared that he had to woo Faur for a bit before she agreed to get married. "She has a bit of a stubborn streak, so it then took me several years until she agreed to be my bride, my best beloved. But I'm even stubborner than she is. I won!" he recalled to PEOPLE.

"We both felt deep in our hearts all these years that m -

arrying each other felt right," Faur added.

The pair eventually wed on Aldrin’s 93rd birthday, which also happened to be the day he was honored at the Living Legends of Aviation 20th Annual Awards gala. Aldrin recalled, "All the stars were now aligned to marry."

They held a small wedding ceremony in a park close to where they live, joined by some of their family and friends. Aldrin's daughter Jan, son Andy, grandson Jeffrey and his great grandkids were in attendance along with Faur's son, Vlad Ghenciu, and her granddaughters Kaia and McCali.

"It was a beautiful day. We had decided on a private ceremony, as suitably intimate, just us and the stars in the sky," Aldrin recalled of their nuptials.

The couple attended the awards gala at the Beverly Hilton after the ceremony, before heading off to dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel with their closest family and friends.

Aldrin said the day would be "be held dear in our hearts for the rest of our lives.” He added, "I am just the luckiest man in this, or any other, world."
