Meagan Good is giving rare insight into her relationship with boyfriend Jonathan Majors — and how she is committed to standing by him in the wake of his controversies.

The Divorce in the Black actress, 42, was by Majors' side over the past year as the former Marvel star navigated his court case. It culminated in a jury finding him guilty of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degreeharassment, in connection to a 2023 altercation with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

In a conversation with PEOPLE for this week's issue, Good said that despite criticism of her relationship with Majors, 34, she considers herself "someone who’s incredibly rebellious when I believe in something and in someone."

"Those who want to give you the benefit of the doubt will. And those who don’t, won’t. And there’s nothing you can do about it," she adds.

Majors, known for roles in movies likeCreed IIIandAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,wasdropped from the Marvel Cinematic Universeafter his conviction.

In April, Majors wassentenced to complete a year of an in-person batterersintervention program in Los Angeles. He must also continue mental-health counseling a -

nd avoid contact with Jabbari.

When asked about her Divorce in the Black character Ava, who is a domestic-violence survivor, Good tells PEOPLE that she "understand(s) the comparison" to real-life events, "but what I can say is this: I don’t condone domestic violence at all."

Additionally, Good says that she and her boyfriend “were so busy trying to survive this season of life, I don’t even think we thought about a connection" between his situation and the film's plot.

"It wasn’t until the movie was done that the conversation came up," she adds.

The actress also tells PEOPLE that she relates to her character in the sense that she "understand(s) the devastation of divorce," after her split from now-ex-husband DeVon Franklin, whom she calls "a wonderful, beautiful human being."

And something else she has in common with Ava? “I didn’t anticipate falling in love again," Good says.
