'I'm Excited For It': Shannen Doherty Announced a New Project in Her Last Podcast Episode

Shannen Doherty revealed she was "excited" about a new project during her last podcast episode, which was released just days before her death at age 53.

In the July 8 episode of Doherty's podcast Let’s Be Clear, the actress announced that she would be joining the Charmed rewatch podcast The House of Halliwell — named after the family in the hit television series — with three of her former costars, Holly Marie Combs, Brian Krause, and Drew Fuller.

The rewatch podcast first launched in 2022, according to IMDb, before going on hiatus in October 2023. The current iteration of the podcast states, in the first episode's description, that it is a "reboot" of the initial podcast.

Doherty, who portrayed Prue Halliwell in the first three seasons of Charmed, announced the project on her own podcast in an episode featuring her former on-screen sister Combs, 50, who played Piper Halliwell on the show.

Together, they shared that Doherty would be joining the rewatch podcast after she previously declined to 18 months before.

Combs then said that Doherty was "the reason" the podcast was on hiatus, to which Doherty agreed, jokingly saying, "Shannen's always to blame you guys."

Combs then teasingly said of her friend, "You're the reason. I'm glad you decided to join us after I asked you a year and a half ago. She takes a lot of courting."

However, Doherty argued that she "didn’t know what a podcast was" at the time. 

"I had no idea. I thought it was basically like a TV show, and I didn't understand why there wasn't a deal up front and why it wasn't getting paid... I was clueless," she explained. 

Combs then recalled a text she had received from Doherty saying that she’d consider the offer "when there’s a producer and there’s money." However, the podcast was being independently produced at that time. 

"But that's okay because you found a producer and you found some money," Combs said, referring to Doherty's involvement in House of Halliwell. 

The reboot released its first episode on July 8 — the same day the Let's Be Clear epsiode announcing Doherty's involvement dropped — and saw hosts Combs, Doherty, Krause, 55, (who played Leo Wyatt on the show) and Fuller, 44, (who portrayed Chris Halliwell) discussing the podcast’s origins and, according to the episode's description, "how it could lead to a Charmed reboot."

The description also teases that they will have "surprise" guest appearances. 

It is unclear how many episodes of the podcast were recorded prior to Doherty’s death. 

On the July 8 episode of Let’s Be Clear, the late actress said that she watched "like 4 or 5 episodes" of Charmed for the podcast. She also told Combs of her acting in episodes she watched that, "I was really impressed with you. Obviously, I knew you were a good actress. You were also my friend. It's why I was like, she's doing the show or I'm not doing it."

"I’m excited for it," Doherty said of House of Halliwell. "The four of us have a lot of chemistry."

She also revealed that preparing for the rewatch podcast was "essentially" the first time she had ever watched the hit series. "I never watched an episode except the ones I directed, in the edit room," Doherty explained.

She continued of watching the show: "I was really impressed. I felt the connection between the sisters. I felt that family unit."

Later, Doherty stated that she was "nervous" about joining the podcast given its previous iteration.

"I think to be really upfront and honest, I'm nervous about it because you guys are very established and you three have a really good sort of rapport with each other on the podcast," she told Combs.

Doherty added, "So I worry about coming on right now of people's reaction. You know? Like, are they gonna say, 'Well, it was so much better without Shannen,' but it's because I'm always expecting rejection."

Combs noted that "You can't please everybody all the time," and then spoke about what Charmed had meant for those involved, as well as Doherty's varied involvement in the show.

"The thing is, I don't think people ever realized what a heart project it was for us. So, there's that. And I think your memories and your interpretation of things is much more artistic than mine. Like, I'm just the one there bleeding emotions, but you were very much invested in what the show looked like. And the lighting. And obviously, then you directed. So it's a different perspective than mine," she said.
