Two people are dead and another person was seriously injured after a 350,000-lb. load detached from a truck and fell onto a vehicle in Central Texas.

Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene while the driver was airlifted to a local hospital after the accident, which happened in Temple along State Highway 36 shortly before 11:30 a.m. on April 27, Temple Fire and Rescue said in a release posted to Facebook.

Upon arrival, first responders found the "oversized load had come off of its trailer, pinning a vehicle beneath." Officials added that it took emergency personnel just over four hours to extricate the male driver, who had life-threatening injuries and was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple.

The highway remained closed through the weekend and will reopen sometime Monday, a city of Temple spokesperson tells PEOPLE. "They are working to clear it and make sure it is safe to reopen," Sydney McBride, public relations coordinator, says.

"The cause of the collision is still under investigation," Temple Fire and Rescue said, noting that "clean up and recovery efforts" were ongoing.
