Peter Dinklage had a far better off-screen relationship with his Game of Thrones costar Charles Dance than he had on-screen.

The actor, 55, appeared on the latest episode of Hot Ones on Thursday, Oct. 17, and chatted about his time on the HBO fantasy show and the friendships he forged with his castmates.

The four-time Emmy winner explained to host Sean Evans how much he values his friendship with his onscreen father, Dance. Dinklage portrayed Tyrion Lannister and Dance, 78, portrayed Tywin Lannister.

Evans, 38, asked if it was true that Dance was “so appalled” by how Tywin treated Tyrion that “he made it a habit” to apologize to Dinklage during takes.

“I love Charlie Dance, he’s one of my favorite human beings,” Dinklage began. The actor explained that all Dance’s character did was “humiliate me” and eventually sentence Tyrion to death. Before he detailed the interactions, Dinklage credited their emotional performances to the “great dialogue” from GoT creators Dan Weiss and David Benioff. “It really felt really lived in.”

“We would get really invested in those things,”  he said. “Just like between every take, he would come over and just gently touch me on the shoulder.” Dinklage said they didn’t have the time to “hug it out,” but the interactions “felt very paternal too.”  -

“But, he played a horrible human being, but he’s one of my favorite human beings,” the actor told Evans.

Ahead of the season 3 finale in March 2013, Dance spoke with NME and praised Dinklage. The veteran actor confessed to constantly apologizing to his costar. “I spend a lot of my time with Peter Dinklage and he’s the most adorable man, a wonderful actor,” Dance said at the time.

“After all those scenes, I apologize to him every time. I have to treat him like s—. You’ve only seen a little snippet of the awfulness in episode 1.”

The widely popular show first premiered in April 2011 and aired its series finale in May 2019. Throughout the eight seasons, the series garnered 164 Emmy nominations and scored 59 awards.

Since it wrapped, multiple spinoff series have been in development, including the prequel, House of the Dragon, which debuted in August 2022. Additional projects are also apparently underway.
